10 Natural Ways to Reduce Allergies — Without Reaching for the Antihistamines

Keeping windows closed during high-pollen periods -- particularly on windy days -- is one of the simplest and most effective things you can do. When ventilation is needed, use the recirculation setting in your car rather than pulling in outside air. At home, run air conditioning rather than opening windows during peak pollen season.

Check local pollen counts regularly -- most weather apps now include this data -- and plan outdoor activities accordingly. Pollen counts are typically highest in the morning and on warm, dry, windy days.


2. Maintain Your Air Filters

Air conditioning and HVAC filters trap pollen, mold spores, and other airborne allergens before they circulate through your living space. Change or clean filters regularly -- at minimum at the start of each allergy season -- and consider upgrading to HEPA-rated filters if you haven't already. Standalone HEPA air purifiers in bedrooms are particularly worth the investment for people with significant environmental allergies, since we spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping.
