Can Dr. Varela be my primary care physician?

…How does this work?

Yes. Dr. Varela treats all conditions a primary care doctor would including diagnosis, testing + prescriptions. We refer out for specialty care such as OBGYN, cardiology, or surgery. If you have a medical emergency, we recommend that you visit urgent care or an ER.

Dr. Varela’s job is to help you achieve your healthiest life, on top of providing great medical care. As a new patient, your first consultation is typically 60+ minutes—that’s 4x the length of a typical doctor visit. You will complete an initial intake form prior to this meeting, answering questions about your medical history + current symptoms. We look at much more than the usual doctor, including: diet, lifestyle, exercise habits, genetic profile, + mental health. You’ll receive a treatment plan designed to help you resolve chronic conditions + improve your health, while reducing the need for prescription pills + expensive specialists. Whatever your health status, we are here to support you.


Do you accept insurance?

We do not accept any form of insurance. Dr. Toni Varela, NMD is classified as a primary care doctor, but insurance companies don’t recognize our healthcare model. After each medical visit, we can provide a superbill that you can submit to insurance for out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients choose to pay for their plans using FSA/HSA dollars. It may be best to contact your insurance provider to see what your coverage entails - Usual office visit codes are 99205 for new patients + 99215 for established patients. IV therapy 96365 + 96366.


What types of testing do you offer + is it covered by insurance?

Dr. Varela will work with you to customize testing orders based on your health needs + personal preferences. We offer both standard blood work + in-depth specialty testing to help construct a comprehensive picture of your health + better informed treatment. All tests, however, are optional + a superbill for possible insurance reimbursement can be provided. If you choose to run any advised labs through insurance (if an option), it is at your own risk whether or not any of the cost is covered. Some of our most frequently prescribed specialty tests assess allergies, cortisol + hormones, genetics, microbiome health, + toxic metal levels.
